Here are some of the answers to the questions you guys asked me 🙂
Anonymous asked: What kind of things have you been watching on Netflix lately?
I watch Drag Race, Star Trek Discovery and Jane The Virgin every week. I’ve also been really enjoying an Australian show called Glitch, and I really liked the new Chris Lilley show Lunatics.
Anonymous asked: How do you decide on which poems to create as visual poems?
I tend to look at the imagery presented in a poem, and assess how realistic it is that I’ll be able to get footage to go with it, and whether the poem will benefit from being expanded to a video format.
Sam asked: What software do you use to make podcasts?
I used Anchor, and occasionally I’ll use Bandlab to clean up the audio, although I don’t often have to do that.
Anonymous asked: Can you tell us any more about the project you are filming in Blackpool in the summer?
I’m planning to film some visual poems there. Maybe a music video too 🙂
Alex asked: Would you ever do a whole album of songs based on your poems, or a book of poems based on your songs?
That is a cool idea, so maybe some day. I have written quite a few poems based on songs I’ve done, and the other way around, so I could do. Sometimes it helps me to see things from another perspective.
Anonymous asked: What podcasts would you recommend?
I like Jaackmate’s Happy Hour, and Remainiacs. I’d also obviously recommend one of mine ha 🙂
Kerry Ann asked: If you weren’t a writer, what would you want to do for a job?
I always find this question difficult, because I’m not really able to do anything else… I always liked the idea of being a member of parliament, but I think I would get too frustrated by all the immature behaviour of some people in that field. It’s bad enough watching it unfold on TV, so I can’t imagine how angry I’d be watching it in real life haha. It would be nice to be able to support and represent my community though, and to be able to give a voice for some of the people who are often ignored by the government. Other than that, I did briefly consider journalism, with a focus on politics or culture (which is a kind of writing, so maybe this is cheating, but…)
Gabbie asked: Do you have any advice for someone who wants to make video poems like yours?
The best thing I can advise is to find a visual style and aesthetic that matches with your writing voice. If you create something that looks like someone else’s style (sorry if that makes no sense, I just don’t know how else to describe it…), it won’t feel authentically you, so your audience won’t really have a reason to watch your work, because they could just watch someone else’s and get the same effect.
There are lots of different video softwares available, so you should find one that you feel comfortable with. You don’t have to use the most expensive one, there are lots of cheap ones, and even some free ones, so try out a few and see what works for you.
Anonymous asked: Will you post more about the kind of music you listen to when you write?
Yes, I have a spotify playlist available here 🙂
That’s all for this edition, kids. If you want to ask me a question, you can send them in here.
